Hotels are rated depending on the quality of service that is provided and also the level of luxury. Hotels are rated from one to five stars, one being the lowest. The English Tourism Council in the UK has a standardised ratings system, and rates properties on cleanliness, the quality of the service, the guest rooms, bathrooms, safety and security, and the interior of the property.
One star hotels will be generally clean with friendly staff, but there will be a lack of services and facilities, leading to inexpensive prices. Rooms may be small, with around 75% of rooms having en-suite bathrooms. There will usually be a bar in the lounge. One star hotels are on a low budget, and there isn’t likely to be maid service.
Two star hotels will offer more facilities, though the level of luxury will still be fairly low. The services will be straightforward and basic like a one star hotel, though more personal service is available, and the guest rooms will have more to offer, such as more comfortable facilities and a colour television. All rooms will usually have an en-suite bathroom and a lift is usually provided.
Three star hotels will offer a wider variety and better quality facilities then two star and one star hotels, and will have larger rooms. Room service is available, along with laundry services and there will be friendly staff to help guests at all times.
Four star hotels will have very good quality facilities, with en suite rooms and high levels of comfort. There will be better quality food, as our star hotels place more emphasis on this area, and staff will be knowledgeable and sociable. There will be 24 hour service, along with refreshments, snacks, and laundry services. Rooms will be well equipped with fitted showers in bathrooms, hair dryers, coffee and tea facilities and entertainment facilities.
Five star hotels will offer the highest level of luxury possible, and a wide range of excellent quality facilities in addition to lower star rated hotels. Staff will provide good quality service, with 24 hour room service, maid service and security service. The interior of a five star hotel will be sophisticated, with luxurious rooms, each with internet access points, a television and DVD player, and a safe for guests personal items. The restaurants will have excellent quality food and drink, and there will usually be exercise facilities such as a gymnasium and a spa.
Hotels which are given a red star rating by the AA (Automobile Association) are hotels which have been rated amongst the top 200 hotels of Great Britain and Ireland.
